Alex stopped by yet another pen that had a group of dusty, skinny Brumbies in it. All three were probably destined for dog-food, and definitely not what she was after. She moved on, past two men arguing over a rock-bottom price for the trio. The big one with the grizzled, matted beard was probably a representative of the local knackers. He had an enormous beer-belly and reeked of cigarette smoke. With a wrinkle of her nose, Alex bypassed them and moved to the next pen. In it was a gorgeous big chestnut mare, copper all over without a lick of white. Her mane and tail were a shade lighter than her gleaming coat. Alex couldn't believe she was a Brumby, she was so different looking to the other worm-ridden, lice-infested, pot-bellied horses. Unlike them she was in a pen of her own, and she was fretting, trotting up and down the fence and kicking out at anybody who came close.

She started and turned, but when she saw it was him she quickly turned back to face the horse. Gorgeous yes. Pricey, most definitely.

Still ... she said, running her eye down the legs of the horse. Can't harm asking.

suppose not...I think I might go buy some dog food...I've never owned a brumby before. He said pulling his hat down on his head.

Me either she confessed. At least ... I've never outright broke one myself. My dad used to break them and I'd get to finish them up once they were started.

Alex watched the one trotting around the pen, thinking not of the horse but of Shane ...

He grinned as the man made a joke and then shook hands and exchanged money for ownership papers

The brumby halted on the opposite side of the pen from Alex and pricked its ears at Shane, then shook its head and resumed its feverish trotting.
